Short history of “St.Anne” Romanian Orthodox

                                        Church of Jacksonville – Florida

The Romanian orthodox church of the Orthodox Romanian Community of Jacksonville Florida was founded in the summer of 1993 by the hope and hardship of the God loving Christian-Orthodox Romanians who had moved to Jacksonville (immigrated to USA) only a few years before.

With their hearts full of hope and because of their unity, the few members succeed, in short time, in getting organized and find an adequate space to rent as a worship place. With the blessing of I.P.S. Bishop Nathaniel of R.O.E.A they are sent a priest, Reverend Alexandru Partioc. On the rented property the Romanian community, who belongs to the R.O.E.A, took as its patron “St.Anne”, Holy Mary’s mother. In a short period of time they succeeded in rearranging the three buildings according to the social and religious needs of the Romanian religious community defined Romanian Orthodox Church. Thus, one of the building is becomes the Church, another is rearranged into a parish office and the house becomes the residence for the parish priest and part of it is used as a social house. The other building/house on the property was used by the owner of the lot as a residence. The church paid a monthly rent of 700$ and used about 3 acres of the 3-4 acres of the entire lot. The property was located nearby downtown of Jacksonville, thus a very good central position. After more than a year the parish priest is transferred and a new reverend father is brought, Father Adrian Fetea. He comes to Jacksonville on October 1st 1994 and on 30th of November 1995 he transfers to a northern parish. Between December 1st 1995 and august 1997, Father Vasilica Bitere serves as reverend father to the “St.Anne” church. In 1996 the church looses the rented property as they are not able to buy the property, which is sold, eventually, by the owner to another community.

Those who remain to back the church led by M. Ion Popa buy the present day property in November 1997. The property was a 7.4 acres land which in its vast majority, 95%, was covered with bushes and trees. In the front part of the property, under a blue tent a worship place is organized.

On June 1st 1998 the R.O.E.A, by the blessing of I.P.S. Archbishop Nathaniel, sends Father Adrian Balescu as the new parish priest. Slowly the things go back to normal. Not with the same enthusiasm and hope as in the beginning, but more with distrust and blaming the past, the few remaining members and the new parish priest start by setting up a small worship place in the open air, cleaning the land and eventually building a 1500 square feet chapel for the immediate needs of the church. We mention here that this was done by 15 families over 5 years, and the investment was of about 150 000 dollars in between 1999-2004. For our future, the future of our children and of the church we wish to build a bigger church, a social gathering house, apartments and a cemetery.
